Information on the lab tours Wednesday excursion

Please join us in touring some of Curtin and Western Australia’s world-class research facilities.

We will be visiting CSIRO’s Pawsey Super Computing Centre and the John de Laeter Centre.

facilities

The John de Laeter Centre is home to a suite of advanced instruments, specialising in geoscience characterisation. The centre and its staff have contributed to research of asteroid Bennu from NASA’s OSIRIS-Rex mission. Our tour guides for the John de Laeter centre will be Ashley Rogers, a PhD student working on understanding the geochemistry and classifications of iron meteorites, and Dr Kai Rankenburg. We are excited to have such knowledgeable and experienced guides to show us the various instruments used in meteorite characterisation.

We have a 60 minute tour of each facility.

We will also show you the laboratories behind Western Australia’s first cubesat. The Binar Space program has launched 4 cubesats in total. This has been a largly student driven effort, with in-house design and assembly. We will have a short (20-30 minute) look around their laboratories; meeting the team and tools that go into their cubesats.

Date and Time:

Wednesday July 9th, 12:45pm - 4:30pm (approximate end time)

Transport and Timing:

Please meet in Building 418 (conference venue for Wednesday morning) at 12:45PM. We will walk as a group to Pawsey. This is a 2 km, 25 minute walk, which will happen rain or shine. If you have any concerns about the walk, please contact the LOC organisers (details below) as we are more than happy to drive a small number of participants. The Pawsey tour will be 1:30pm - 2:30pm.

We then have a bus collecting us at 2:30pm to take us from Pawsey to the John de Laeter Center. The tours here are expected to run 3:00pm - 4:00pm with a flexible end time. The Binar space program lab tours will be in Building 204 for 4pm onwards, which is just across from the John de Laeter Centre.

The tours will finish at Building 301 (or Building 204). If you need help with directions or transport afterwards, LOC volunteers will be around to assist you.
